Religious Studies Program Application Information
Thank you for your interest in the PhD program and the Master of Arts program in Relligious Studies (
REL ST) in the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies. Our on-line application portal will open on
September 15 to accept applications for the following academic year. Please note that effective September 1, 2004 the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) charges a $100 application fee.

In addition to completing an on-line application, you will need to provide the following:
- A statement of your research interests (maximum 2 pages in length)
- A writing sample of 10 to 15 pages (PhD applicants only)
The FGSR will not issue letters of admission until all original degree certificates (or certified true copies), official transcripts (or certified true copies) and official TOEFL scores are received. To facilitate departmental and faculty deliberations, please ensure that the necessary documentation is forwarded to our office as soon as possible. The mailing address for these documents is:

Once all documents are received, the REL ST Graduate Program Committee will adjudicate the application and if the applicant is successful, the application will then be submitted to the FGSR for the final adjudication process. Once this process has been completed, the FGSR will send the student an ‘Official Admission Approval’ letter. If the application is not successful, the applicant will be notified by the C LIT Graduate Program Coordinator.
The deadline to apply for the REL ST PhD program is January 5
and May 1 for the MA program.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all documents are received on time. To meet respective deadlines, we strongly encourage you to have all of your documents ready to mail at the time that you submit your on-line application. No action will be taken on applications until all documentation has been received.
Funding – Canadian/Permanent Resident & International Students
PhD students are given first priority for funding, during the first four years of the program, in the form of graduate assistantships. MA students are not guaranteed funding.
Recruitment Scholarships
To be considered for a recruitment scholarship nomination, complete program applications must be received in our office before December 1.The applicant does not apply for recruitment scholarships. Our office will send qualified applications to the FGSR.
